A Fast Distributed Algorithm for Sparse Semidefinite Programs

چکیده
This paper aims to develop a fast, parallelizable algorithm for an arbitrary decomposable semidefinite program (SDP). To formulate a decomposable SDP, we consider a multi-agent canonical form represented by a graph, where each agent (node) is in charge of computing its corresponding positive semidefinite matrix subject to local equality and inequality constraints as well as coupling and overlapping (consistency) constraints with regards to the agent’s neighbors. Every arbitrary SDP problem can be cast as a decomposable SDP, where the number of nodes and the connectivity of the underlying graph both depend on the sparsity of the original SDP problem. Based on the alternating direction method of multipliers, we design a numerical algorithm, which has a guaranteed convergence under very mild assumptions. Each iteration of this algorithm has a simple closed-form solution, consisting of matrix multiplications and eigenvalue decompositions performed by individual agents as well as information exchanges between neighboring agents. The cheap iterations of the proposed algorithm enable solving large-scale sparse conic optimization problems. The proposed algorithm is applied to several randomly generated SDP problems with over 10 million variables, which are solved in less than 20 minutes.

Approximating Semidefinite Packing Programs
In this paper we define semidefinite packing programs and describe an algorithm to approximately solve these problems. Semidefinite packing programs arise in many applications such as semidefinite programming relaxations for combinatorial optimization problems, sparse principal component analysis, and sparse variance unfolding techniques for dimension reduction. Our algorithm exploits the struc...
متن کاملDistributed Computation for Sparse Semidefinite Programming with Applications to Power Optimization Problems
Major power optimization problems, such as optimal power flow, state estimation and unit commitment, can be formulated or well approximated as semidefinite programs (SDPs). However, the inability to efficiently solve large-scale SDPs is an impediment to the deployment of such formulations in practice, which has made the industry to resort to simpler but less accurate formulations such as linear...
متن کاملA high-performance software package for semidefinite programs: SDPA 7
The SDPA (SemiDefinite Programming Algorithm) Project launched in 1995 has been known to provide high-performance packages for solving large-scale Semidefinite Programs (SDPs). SDPA Ver. 6 solves efficiently large-scale dense SDPs, however, it required much computation time compared with other software packages, especially when the Schur complement matrix is sparse. SDPA Ver. 7 is now completel...
متن کاملA parallel interior point decomposition algorithm for block angular semidefinite programs
We present a two phase interior point decomposition framework for solving semidefinite (SDP) relaxations of sparse maxcut, stable set, and box constrained quadratic programs. In phase 1, we suitably modify the matrix completion scheme of Fukuda et al. [11] to preprocess an existing SDP into an equivalent SDP in the block-angular form. In phase 2, we solve the resulting block-angular SDP using a...
متن کاملSolving Large-Scale Sparse Semidefinite Programs for Combinatorial Optimization
We present a dual-scaling interior-point algorithm and show how it exploits the structure and sparsity of some large scale problems. We solve the positive semideenite relaxation of combinatorial and quadratic optimization problems subject to boolean constraints. We report the rst computational results of interior-point algorithms for approximating the maximum cut semideenite programs with dimen...
